Cantina Cardèto

Summary

Cantina Cardèto is an historical cooperative of vine-growers. The cooperative was founded on August 30, 1949 as the Wine Cooperative for the Orvieto area (CO.VI.O) and had its headquarters in Orvieto Scalo. In 1991 a new building was completed, inaugurated, and put into operation in the hamlet of Sferracavallo. In 2005, the Cooperative changed its name to “Cantina Cardèto“. Cardèto is today one of the most important wine cooperative in Umbria counting approximately 80 growers in its membership, who cultivate about 500 hectares of vineyards. Cardèto follows eco-sustainability agriculture and in April 2020 launched their first line of organic wines.

The Pierleone line of wines from Cardèto takes its name from two important figures: “Il Pierleone”, a soldier of fortune who lived during the Middle Ages, well known for his courage and fearlessness. And another important historical figure and Umbrian noble: Pierleone Leoni (1440-1492) who was an esteemed Italian doctor, philosopher, and astrologer. He was one of the most talented men of science living at that time and became the personal doctor to Lorenzo de Medici.
