Summary

Civettaio was one of the first who planted vineyards in the new DOC of Montecucco, which is a sub-region of Southern Tuscany’s Maremma area. The Il Civettaio story begins with Gregorio dell'Adami de Tarczal, who left his comfortable job in the food industry to become a farmer. He purchased Il Civettaio in 1990, which at the time was nothing more than a few hectares of vineyards, 1000 olive trees, and a dilapidated shed. There was no running water nor electricity. So, Gregorio drilled for water and built a small winery and a modest apartment above which he still lives in today. The shed was renovated and is now a 4 apartment Agriturismo.

Il Civettaio has 7 hectares under vine - 5 hectares - planted with sangiovese; the rest are planted with Vermentino, Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, and Alicante. Located in Civitella Paganico, il Civettaio's vineyards enjoys a series of elements that make their terroir unique and particularly apt to produce organic wines and extra-virgin olive oils of great quality. The red, white, and rose' wines are DOC Montecucco and DOC Maremma Toscana, and cultivation is certified organic by ICEA.

At a distance of only 25km from the sea, Il Civettaio has an extremely favorable microclimate with an exceptional level of sunshine (2300 hours a year) and a very limited amount of rain. The vineyards and olive groves are on sloped hills (average height of 150 meters on the sea level) with optimal exposure.
