Summary

Cantina Sandro Fay is a producer based in Lombardy’s Valtellina region. This is an area with a rich wine and food history, and is the largest terraced wine-growing area in Italy. In 1973, Sandro Fay planted the first vineyards and created the family run company, and since 1998, Sandro handed operations over to his children; Marco and Elena.

The estate currently farms 15 hectares of vines at an altitude of between 350 and 900 meters above sea level and is in Valgella, one of 5 of the Valtelina Superiore Docg sub-zones. Valgella stretches over 137 hectares in the commune of Teglio. The name comes from “Valgel”, a dialect word describing the small streams that characterize the area. The soils here are a combination of sand and silt from crumbled granitic formations that vary in thickness from less than one meters to a few meters deep. These wines are beautiful expressions of Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo.
