La Zorra

Summary

La Zorra is located in Spain’s Salamanca region- just miles away from the border with Portugal. The estate has 20 hectares of vines spread across nine villages in the region, with the heart of their vineyards near their home village of Mogarraz. The three areas have markedly different types of soil ranging from sandy-granitic to clay and slate.

From 60+-year-old vines on granite and slate soils the main grape in the region is Rufete and Aragones (the local name for a lighter clone of tempranillo). The regions is well known for it’s red wines, but there is also Rufete blanco is also made at the winery, about which very little is known, but early examples have proved very promising. With correlations to be drawn between Sierra de Salamanca and Sierra de Gredos, this ancient mountainous wine regions shows incredible potential, and Rufete has the potential to be one of the premier indigenous red grapes of Spain.
