Roland Green Pinot Noir

VARIETAL
Pinot Noir

NOTES
VINEYARD: Roland Green. Planted in 1988, Roland Green is home to 6 acres of mature vines and 5 acres of new Pinot noir plantings. The new plantings are adapted to the challenges of warmer vintages to come. Named for David Lett’s father, Roland Green Lett, the 5 acres of Pinot Noir here were planted in 1988 to Pommard and Wadenswil clones. This direct south-facing vineyard provides wines of great texture, depth and finesse from a nearly perfect site.

VINIFICATION: De-stemmed and fermented using all native yeasts in a combination of tank and barrel. minimal racking, no fining or filtering. Aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, 12% new.
2016 started off with a warm, wet March, and continued with warmer than average temperatures throughout the spring and summer. Fortunately, the
extra water early in the year prevented the vines from experiencing drought stress in the summer. As the warm summer progressed, Eyrie prepared for a harvest more than a month ahead of what they consider normal. In September, just as harvest started, moderate temperatures moved in. With cooler weather, fruit ripened at a leisurely pace. This provided winemakers an unhurried opportunity to choose their fruit for perfect ripeness.

TASTING NOTES: The Roland Green Pinot Noir is wine that possesses great depth, texture and clarity and has savory notes of pine and orange peel while maintaining tension and precision.

PRESS/RATINGS: Fully volcanic soils at this more elevated plot, this has quite a pristine feel with pure blueberries and red cherries fruit on offer as well as dried flowers and an earthy nuance too. The palate is very succulent, long and contained. There's a sleek feel to the shape here and a long hold on the red-cherry and blueberry fruit to finish. impressive tannin extrusion here. Try from 2022. (96 -- JAMES SUCKLING, 5.1.2019)

The 2016 Pinot Noir The Eyrie has a medium ruby-purple color and pretty nose of violet, dried hollyhock, prosciutto, leather, blueberries and boysenberries with red currant, oolong tea leaves and earth aromas. It’s medium-bodied and ultra silky with gobs of perfumed fruit layers, a very finely grained frame and mouthwatering acidity, finishing long and perfumed. Yes! Jason Lett says that the Outcrop and The Eyrie Pinot Noirs come from the same clones and elevation and have a similar aspect, but the main difference between the two wines is vine age—the average vine age for the Outcrop is 27 years, while average vine age for The Eyrie Pinot Noir is 47 years.
