NOTES
VINEYARD: This Chardonnay is 100% estate grown in a little 2 acre parcel planted in 1999 on a steep slope with rows running up and down the hill from north-east to south-west. This 2016 version continues a string of very compelling wines that started with the 2004 vintage, and bears witness to the recent rebirth of exciting Chardonnays coming out of the Willamette Valley.
VINIFICATION: Belle Pente has always done two harvests for Chardonnay: an early pick for fresh, citrus qualities, and a later pick for riper, tropical characteristics. In this warm 2016 vintage, the blend includes 60% from the early pick (9/10) and 40% from the later pick (9/15). 100% barrel fermentation (Oregon 25%/French 75%), but with very modest use of new oak: 25% new; 40% 2-3 year; 45% 4+ year (neutral). Extended sur-lie aging for 18 months in barrel for full malolactic. 209 cases produced
TASTING NOTES: This 2016 version incorporates grapes from the two harvest dates mentioned above, the earlier to emphasize freshness and citrus fruit flavors and aromas, and the later to contribute richer, riper tropical fruit characteristics. Enjoy this incredibly food friendly Chardonnay now and over the next 10 years.
