NOTES
VINEYARD: Starting with a small parcel planted in 1934 in Bellmunt, Costers del Priorat now owns 25 hectares in four villages. Sourced from Finca Sant Marti (Bellmunt del Priorat) and Finca Mas Alsera (Torroja del Priorat) at 350m to 500m elevation. The vines were planted in 1950 and 1975 on decomposed red slate soils known as llicorella. 'Pissarres' is derived from the word "pizarra" which is "slate" in Spanish.
VINIFICATION: A mix of destemmed and whole cluster grapes are fermented with indigenous yeast in cement vats. The wine is then aged 12 months in 2,300L and 3,000L Slovenian oak barrels and amphoras. Animal traction is used to work the soil on the steep terraces and chemicals are never used, only natural, organic and biodynamic treatments are utilized, the winery is practicing organic.
