Domaine Peaux Rouges Côt Boy

Summary

Jean-Guillaume Caplain of Domaine Peaux Rouges is new to the vigneron scene, with 2017 being his first official vintage. He purchased a former wine farm near Monthou-sur-Cher after having lived in Quebec, Canada from the mid-1990s through 2011 where he shot documentary films about the effects of the hydroelectric dam industry on the First Nation population. He made return trips to France to study winemaking at the Université du Vin in Suze-la-Rousse in the Rhöne Valley, after which he trained with Philippe Tessier near Cheverny.

Jean-Guillaume's initial awakening to wine began by being exposed to Champagne, Burgundy, and Bordeaux as his grandfather had a very nice cellar. While in Quebec he began to drink natural wines (Quebec was from early on a good place to find these wines) and this was a life-changing experience for him. The idea of making wine took root slowly. Having no family connection to the vigneron world he moved methodically: going to viticulture school, training on the job with winemakers - the foremost of whom being Philippe Tessier - where he was the second in charge in the cellar and chai for three vintages.

Presently, he has 30ha of pinot noir (massal selection) which he planted in 2011, and 1.5ha of gamay and côt. For now, he is supplementing his gamay and côt production with purchased grapes as he converts 4ha to organic certification.
