Gruner Veltliner, Ribolla Gialla, Kerner, Friulano
NOTES
VINEYARD: 175-acre certified Biodynamic® estate vineyard and winery with 87 acres under vine. calcareous sedimentary soils with non-native erratic granite contrast with vineyards located to the east with iron-rich volcanic soils. In addition to the soil characteristics, Johan's site is affected by persistent coastal winds. Daily, the sun heats the valley floor and causes a “heat-sink” effect. This differential draws maritime air through the coast range, directly across from the estate. Annually, there is a 30-40% greater daily wind speed compared to the north Willamette Valley.
FARMING: Biodynamic, Restorative Organic
VINIFICATION: Each variety was 100% whole berry destemmed and fermented for approximately 1 month on skins, the entirety of primary fermentation, then pressed at dryness. Fermentations and elevage were kept separate by variety, with the grüner veltliner skin-fermented in amphorae (2022 vintage being the first time for this fermentation vessel). Aged 11 months in neutral barrel for all varietals before being blended at bottling. Unfined, unfiltered.
