Träkál The Spirit of Patagonia
NOTES
All of Träkál’s ingredients are sourced from Patagonia, within 100 square kilometers of their water source. They use local apple and pear varietals to create the base alcohol and work with local communities to hand-pick seven native herbs and four native berries. It's essentially a brandy base that is then infused like a gin with local botanicals. On the third and final distillation, they use essential oils from each botanical and vapor-infuse fresh herbs.
It’s slightly sweet and very herbaceous, with notes of cooling fennel and ripe red berries. There’s also something about it that’s hard to pinpoint, probably because all seven of the botanicals used in Träkál prove native to Patagonia and don’t have a mirror product in the States. It’s recommended both on the rocks and in cocktails. As the founders of the company say, "The profile is approachable like a gin, but instead of a juniper bite, you get a bit of the sweetness of the apple and pear for a smoother finish. We like to say, it sips like a whiskey and mixes like a gin.”
