Navet 1804

Summary

Navét 1804 is a Clairin producer founded by four lifelong friends who bonded over their shared experiences and cultural upbringing as children of Caribbean immigrants. Navét translates to “crafted” in Haitian Creole, and 1804 is a reference to the year Haiti reclaimed her independence.

The four founders, Eddy, Jay, Joe, and Dwayne met as kids growing up in Brocton, and went on to attend college together where they became affectionately known as “The Haitian Rum Guys”. While in school, the fellas decided to one day create a company that would positively effectuate change in Haiti. Their gravitation towards and love of cane spirits provided focus for what exactly that company would do.

Over many years, the founders visited Haiti in search of a partner to help bring their vision to life. Haiti has hundreds of small, independent distilleries scattered throughout the country. The task of finding the right operation was a challenge, but one the four founders were up for. Over many tastings and meetings, they ended up finding the perfect distillery partner in the Leriche family, who were cane farmers turned distillers going back several generations.

Navét 1804 is produced at the Leriche family distillery in Léogâne which is a coastal community about 30km west of Port-au-Prince. The sugar cane used comes from four fields in Léogâne owned by Navét 1804. The cane (Madame Meuze) is farmed and harvested regeneratively, and the harvesters are paid directly.

The three expressions currently available are Jus de Canne (fresh pressed sugar cane juice, fermented and distilled) Sirop de Canne (sugar cane juice lightly boiled, then fermented and distilled) and the Sirop Vielli (Sirop de Canne aged two years in new American oak barrels).
