Weingut Kranz

Summary

The winery is located in the municipality of Ilbesheim (Südliche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. The family has been involved in winegrowing for many generations and today is run by Boris Kranz and his wife Kerstin. It was largely thanks to Boris that, after decades of effort, the Ilbesheimer Kalmit was recognized as an official single vineyard in 2008. The vineyards cover 17 hectares and the family practices organic farming throughout. Sixty percent is planted to white varietals: Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, Auxerrois, and Sauvignon Blanc, and 40% to red, primarily Pinot Noir. The wines are produced in three lines: site wines, estate wines and local wines. Some of the white wines are fermented cool after maceration and matured in steel tanks or large wooden barrels. The red wines are matured in barriques. Fine brandies (various fruit brandies, yeast, grape, pomace, cider) and bottle-fermented sparkling wines (Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé) are also produced. The winery has been a member of the VDP(Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) since the beginning of 2012.

During favorable wine years spontaneous fermentations prevail, often incorporating whole cluster pressings with a combination of stainless steel and neutral barrel fermentations and aging.  The Kranz family loves this challenge and does not follow a routine, but adapts to the respective circumstances of the vintage. This is also what defines Boris Kranz's individual signature: always evolving and pursuing new ideas to create wines that meet his quality standards. Consistently dry wines, clear, precise, and natural with character of origin.
